Freshwater sponges as indicators of water pollution: an investigative undergraduate lab

چکیده

This lab uses freshwater sponges as model organisms to examine the biological effects of water pollution. Specifically, the focus of this laboratory module is on the effects that chemicals of environmental concern (e.g., endocrine disrupters) have on sponge growth and development. Contamination of aquatic ecosystems is a serious issue in environmental science. Identifying which chemicals we should be concerned with, and determining the consequences of contamination by specific compounds, is a major area of current research. Undergraduates are constantly exposed to news of environmental deterioration, yet few have an idea of how bioassays can help set national drinking water standards or shape environmental guidelines/laws. SEM-EDS and X-ray micro computed tomography studies of skeletal surface pattern and body structure in the freshwater sponge Spongilla lacustris collected from Goczalkowice reservoir habit (Southern Poland).

INTRODUCTION Freshwater sponges are common animals of most aquatic ecosystems. They feed by filtering small particles from the water, and so are thought to be sensitive indicators of pollution. Sponges are strongly associated with the abiotic environment and are therefore used as bioindicators for monitoring of water quality in water habitats. Among the freshwater sponges, Spongilla lacustris i...

Lifting China's water spell.

China is a country with significant but unevenly distributed water resources. The water stressed North stays in contrast to the water abundant and polluted South defining China's current water environment. In this paper we use the latest available data sets and adopt structural decomposition analysis for the years 1992 to 2007 to investigate the driving forces behind the emerging water crisis i...

New Approaches to Study Biodiversity and Evolution of Freshwater Sponges in Ancient Lakes

Freshwater sponges (Porifera; Spongillina) include 6 families. Some of them are endemic of ancient lakes Baikal, Tanganyika, Ohrid and Malawi. Others families are cosmopolitan and inhabit inland waters worldwide. Freshwater sponges are important for cleaning of water due their filter activity and are often main part of benthos in the lakes. The taxonomy of freshwater sponges is difficult that c...

A First Account of Freshwater Potamolepid Sponges (demospongiae, Spongillina, Potamolepidae) from the Middle Eocene: Biogeographic and Paleoclimatic Implications

We report the oldest fossil occurrence of freshwater potamolepid sponges (Demospongiae, Spongillina, Potamolepidae) to date, originating from middle Eocene lake sediments accumulated in the Giraffe kimberlite maar, northern Canada. Sponges are represented by strongyle spicules that are gemmuloscleres. These are described herein as belonging to a new species, Potamophloios canadensis. Because th...

Biochemical changes of Conocarpus erectus (combretaceae) in response to gas refinery air pollution as an air pollution indicator

Environmental pollution consists of different types of pollutants in air, soil, and water. Due to the fact that plants can respond to environmental pollution, they can be used as bio-indicators for environmental monitoring. Air pollution in areas with oil and gas refineries nearby is an important problem. This study aims to survey the effects of gas refinery air pollutants on Conocarpus erectus...
